We just moved into this house last fall. My husband came out ahead of us to find a house and start his job so he did the house hunting. I have to say he did a great job. I love this floor plan. The formal dining room is our playroom because a formal dining room just doesn’t fit our lifestyle-a playroom does!
The door above leads to our kitchen with a small dining area.
The main floor is kind of a square and you can see part of the playroom when you walk in the front door. With that being said, I knew I wanted something that looked decent but was affordable for housing all of the toys. Ikea came to the rescue.
Initially I was going to go for the Expedit shelving, but I knew this was semi-temporary so I wasn’t ready to spend $120 on that shelving unit. Instead I opted to buy three of these galvanized metal shelves and lined them up along the wall(and screwed them into the wall thankfully since my son has already tried to climb them!) I liked the industrial feel to them and know I can fit two into the hall closet and the third will move to the basement bathroom for guest toiletries. The best part- they were only $15 each and they’ve held up well so far.
Here is a little peek at the play room.
When P was a little guy I learned to have a place for everything because he was good about picking up and putting things right where they belong. It helps keep the house picked up since they know where everything should go when they are done playing. Here we grouped some puzzles and widgets(the pyramid things-so fun to build with). Behind those is a drawing by P from last summer of a turtle.
Giving them access to some of the art supplies encourages creativity. These are up high enough so baby can’t reach, but the other two can easily get what they need.
Speaking of baby, we’ve left some of her toys on the bottom shelf so she can easily reach them.
These guys are some of the most used toys. The Lincoln Logs were my husbands as a child-my mother-in-law saved a lot of his toys…I don’t think she had a choice with him because he would have noticed something was missing! Our mega bloks and train set are also well loved.
Playdough supplies-they know this basket has to be brought to the kitchen table. And of course the dominoes and that sweet girl A!
One more view.
Moving to the left is the chalkboard. They love to trace numbers and letters with a Q-tip and water.
This wall is to the right of the shelving. I try to switch out the books for the seasons, but I’m not always successful. I think P has confiscated a lot of his favorite books up in his bedroom!
We’ll have blue moose bid you goodbye. This was my husband’s grandmothers and loved by all of us!
The other side of the room isn’t quite finished and will be changing-it houses the train table and a collage of pictures. This room is set to change soon so it suits our needs for homeschooling. I kind of want a picnic table to do school work on, but I don’t know if I’ll win that one!
